It's pretty crazy that SXSW 2017 is already behind us! We were gearing up for this intense week for month, it hit hard, and then was gone before we knew it. Luckily, Team Sparkplug has some amazing memories of our time in Austin. Here are a few of our personal favorites!
6. Mexican Food & BBQ
Between free breakfast tacos at every morning party, queso queso queso, love migas at Magnolia Cafe, and BBQ everything - Austin has its share of culinary delicacies. Particularly, NYC (our homebase) has a huge shortage of good Mexican food, so we look forward all year to the Austin eats, and this year was no exception!
5. Flatstock Show
We're usually so busy running around to events, shows, parties, or meeting Sparkplug members, that we've never had time to check out the Flatstock Exhibition. But this year, with the encouragement of a new friend, we made the time to peruse the beautiful art and even purchase a couple items to put up on our walls. For those of you that don't know, the Flatstock Exhibition showcases the works of the world's top gig poster artists. This is definitely a SXSW tradition that we'll never miss again.
4. The Ladies
Of course, we mean female fronted bands! Some of the best shows we saw were bands with female leads - and even some entirely female bands. We love seeing a diverse line up on stage and were blown away by the talent that came out this year. Standouts include: All Our Exes Live in Texas (Note: Despite the name, this was their first time in Texas and these gals were on a mission to get some exes.); Ohmme; San Fermin; and Wild Belle. Pics of all below!
3. Our CEO Jen's Official Panel and Meet Up
We're pretty pumped that our CEO and co-founder Jennifer was involved with not one, but TWO official SXSW events. Jen hosted the women in music meet up at the conference and also was a moderator on the panel "Passport to Women in Music: A Global Review." Both events were very well attended and received great feedback.
2. Pandora @ SXSW
There were noticeably less big, heavily branded parties this year, with companies opting for smaller events and activations. The standout this year was definitely Pandora, with a line up including Mondo Cozmo, Lewis del Mar, Lizzo, Future Islands, and Jimmy Eat World. Although the lines barely moved by mid-way through the evening, once you were inside, you didn't need to go anywhere else for great music.
1. Hanging out with friends (and meeting new ones)
Nothing beats hanging out in the Texas sunshine with your music buds, watching music, eating tacos, and talking shop. We also love that SXSW is the best time of year to meet new people. Whether it's a new collaborator, business prospect, or just a pal, everyone in Austin is open to making new connections.
